Beatrix Rumours was born in London, England in 1894. She came from a small and rather obscure family of lesser nobility that had historically made their living distilling spirits, particularly gin. Not much else is known about her life or her immediate relatives up until her sudden departure from the country in 1912.
At the tender age of 18, Beatrix Rumours had to leave England under strange and somewhat cryptic circumstances which, to this day, remain unknown. Her family was said to have made some mentions of a famous boarding school in Sweden, but no records of Beatrix were ever found there.

The Legend

At the tender age of 18, Beatrix Rumours had to leave England under strange and somewhat cryptic circumstances which, to this day, remain unknown. Her family was said to have made some mentions of a famous boarding school in Sweden, but no records of Beatrix were ever found there.
After a long and mysterious absence of 13 years Beatrix Rumours, having learned of her entire family’s tragic demise from the Spanish Flu, returned to the British Isles, to claim her inheritance, which included a somewhat large estate in the coastal county of Sussex.
Now in her 30s and in no hurry to meet the spousal and maternal demands the society of that time expected of her, Beatrix took up residence at her Sussex estate and devoted herself to her family’s old gin business.
Before long, she became known as somewhat of a recluse. Her appearances in the nearby town became scarcer and scarcer as the years went by and the people started making up their own stories about the mysterious heiress. Little was actually known about her during that time except that she liked to spend most of her time in a small secret garden located somewhere in her family’s vast estate. It is said of that mysterious garden that whatever it lacked in size it more than made up for in sheer beauty and lusciousness.
By the time WWII hit Europe, Beatrix Rumours had managed to bring a renewed version of her family’s gin into every pub in the county and every self proclaimed connoisseur of quality spirits had only the best to say about it.
When asked about the recipe that produced her intensely fragrant yet smooth Gin that apparently bared little resemblance to anything anyone in town had ever tasted before, she referred only to an old family tradition of somehow making use of natural sea water during distillation and the inclusion to that process of 13 special botanicals she had carefully picked herself throughout her extensive and obscure travels around the world.
This flair for secrecy and tightlippedness led to the rise of several rumours about Ms. Rumours’ origins, some admittedly less plausible than others. One such proverbial flight of fancy, probably inspired by Britain’s folkloric traditions, tells of her being a direct descendant of an ancient coven of female Druids that specialized in magic potions and concoctions of all sorts.
A famous British politician who was well known for his love of drinking and cigar smoking, once said about Beatrix Rumours:
“I don’t know where she comes from or what sort of magic she’s been up to, but I’ll be damned if I ever had better Gin in my life. And believe you me, I know Gin.”
Ms. Rumours herself never publicly spoke about any of this. On the contrary, she seemed to enjoy the mythology surrounding her name as it helped spread the word about her Gin to more people.
After the end of the war, Beatrix managed to expand her business significantly and her “magical” Gin was now enjoyed by everyone in England who claimed to know of “good drink”.
The taste of Ms. Rumours’ Gin, distilled with sea water and 13 special botanicals remained unchanged and its quality continued to be kept at the highest level. However, Beatrix is said to have kept a special small batch for a few select friends and customers in which tomato and pepper was ingeniously used in the distillation process, thus giving it a unique and zestful character.
Beatrix Rumours was never married or had any children. After a certain age she seems to have intentionally withdrawn from any kind of social life and as the years went by, her appearances in public all but ceased.
This of course gave fuel to even more rumours and fables and people loved hearing and talking about them in every pub, club or tavern hall in the country, usually over a bottle of old gal Rumours’ Gin.
Some say she went north to join her sisterhood of Druids. Others say she spent her remaining years in voluntary seclusion hiding away in the secret garden of her estate where she continued “brewing” and perfecting her special Gin.
Rumours abound even today, but the true story of Lady Rumours, as the world enjoyed calling her, is yet to be revealed.
